COMMODORE'S CORNER
Debra Valpey,
Commodore
Greetings all water lovers,
Boating is a year round avocation for many of us, like those who are involved in racing and others who like to hang out at the marina polishing things and fixin' stuff (commonly called "marina-ing"). For others it is a seasonal focus. Whichever it is for you, please take note that the FULLLY FUNCTIONING SEASON IS FINALLY UPON US! So, let's get out of the harbor 'cause harbors are great places to rest and be safe but they don't offer new views or new ways to fully appreciate the wonders of our Salish Sea and its surrounding waters.
Earlier in April several of us ventured to Tacoma to celebrate the Daffodil Festival with boats from all over the area. What a party! See Jerry Stephenson's write up in the Barnacle for the juicy detaisl. I proudly represented our club at the Flag Ceremony and on the parade of boats. They actually taught me the proper way to salute (I only poked my eye once) and I did my best to behave myself while in uniform and will do the same during Opening Day Festivities on May 5. Perhaps I will see you there, at the races, watching the parade, or ? Our Mother's Day Style Cruise will be May 11-13. If Mom can't join us, tell her she will be with us in spirit, and that you can be there for her in the later afternoon. You WILL be gaining skills at this cruise that will amaze the dear lady. Thinking ahead, reserve the first week of June for Gig Harbor Days and the last weekend in June for Minto Mingle. July 4th, which is mid week this year, will feature a short day cruise and picnic, followed by fellowship on D Dock aboard (or astride) Sloe Tango for fireworks. A group is planning a cruise to Princess Louisa Inlet in July. Contact George Thompson or Daphne Mackey for details.
Remember to reserve 2nd Tuesdays (through June) for our social/educational evenings. We have a fun twist for June (hint: Bring your ukulele). Check Joan Marie's update inside the Barnacle for details.
The Spring Series for racers concluded on April 28 with awards and tall tales. Please see inside for details. And, keep in mind that racing (RELAXED RULES...) continues with the Annual Mid Sound Summer Social Series (benefitting the Des Moines Area Food Bank and Hospitality House women's shelter) beginning July 5. Contact Kersten Hubbard if you can help out. There are still many tasks to accomplish. The racing team is in the process for incorporating Facebook into their communication tools. This move has been well researched and will be executed carefully to protect members' privacy.
I trust you will thank our volunteer team members and officers for their hard work, visit our Web Site (Mike Ellis appreciates extra "eyes" on the Web site so he can keep it current), and spread the word that TTPYC is an affordable, family friendly, cruising, racing and educational/social club with the emphasis on FUN. (Have you given out your "Calling cards" yet? If so, Doug Andrews can get your more).
Now, let's get out on the harbor!
With Appreciation,
Fondly, Debra Valpey, your Commodore
